Ratcheting up the ratchet: on the evolution of cumulative culture.

Some researchers have claimed that chimpanzee and human culture rest on homologous cognitive and learning mechanisms. While clearly there are some homologous mechanisms, we argue here that there are some different mechanisms at work as well. Chimpanzee cultural traditions represent behavioural biases of different populations, all within the species' existing cognitive repertoire (what we call t...

Mating-System Evolution: Succeeding by Celibacy

Once invented, other chimpanzees become more likely to express the same behaviour themselves — after all, the onlookers could have invented the behaviour themselves, it just happened that another lucky (or perhaps slightly more gifted or motivated) chimpanzee came first and thus acted as a catalyst for the others’ individual learning. The knowns and unknowns of chimpanzee culture.

Claims of culture in chimpanzees appeared soon after the launch of the first field studies in africa.1 The notion of chimpanzee 'material cultures' was coined,2 and this was followed by a first formal comparison, which revealed an astonishing degree of behavioural diversity between the different study communities, mainly in terms of tool use.3 Although this behavioural diversity is still undisp...

As emulation entails learning only about the results of others' actions, it has been thought to curtail any capacity to sustain cultures. Recent chimpanzee diffusion experiments have by ...
